Intuitive eating is eating according to your inner wisdom about what, when, and how to eat.
Everyone has this wisdom, but not everyone is in touch with it.
To reconnect with your inner wisdom you:
- Get rid of what is blocking your intuition
- Practice tuning into your intuition
What could be blocking my intuition?
Think about all the life experiences you’ve had where someone told you to eat differently in some way. Parents, friends, family, TV shows, healthcare providers, books, magazines, websites, advertisements, diet programs, health gurus… everyone’s got an opinion!
You may consider yourself a skeptic, but it’s nearly impossible to avoid taking in at least some of the messages you’ve received about what, when, and how you should be eating.
Some of your beliefs about food and eating might be buried so deep that you don’t even recognize them, so you believe them to be facts rather than opinions.
How do I practice tuning into my intuition?
In a word: Mindfulness. The word “mindfulness” may evoke visions of robed monks sitting in silence, but at its core, mindfulness is simply increased awareness of what is present, without judgment.
There are many ways to bring mindfulness to the way you eat, but most practices involve different ways of bringing more awareness to the qualities of your food, and the way your body responds to food.
Your body knows exactly what it needs. It’s just waiting for you to learn how to listen.
